This first generations with Briggs & Stratton engine was manufactured during 2005. The Cub Cadet RZT 42 is equipped with a 0.5 L (30.5 cu·in) single-cylinder gasoline engine and a hydrostatic transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears.

The Cub Cadet RZT42 zero-turn mower used the Briggs & Stratton 31G777 engine. It is a 0.5 L, 499 cm2, (30.5 cu·in) single-cylinder natural aspirated gasoline engine with 91.0 mm (3.58 in) of the cylinder bore and 79.0 mm (3.11 in) of the piston stroke. This engine produced 17.3 PS (12.7 kW; 17.0 HP) at 3,600 rpm of output power.

The RZT 42 is equipped with differential power steering, open operator station, 11.4 liters (3 US gal.; 2.5 Imp. gal) fuel tank and mid-mount Cub Cadet 42 inch (1,060 mm) mower deck with 2-blade.
