This first generations with Briggs & Stratton engine was manufactured during 2005. The Cub Cadet RZT 42 is equipped with a 0.5 L (30.5 cu·in) single-cylinder gasoline engine and a hydrostatic transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears.

The Cub Cadet RZT42 zero-turn mower used the Briggs & Stratton 31G777 engine.
