The John Deere 55 used an air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke gasoline engine with vertical PTO shaft and recoil starter. The engine has a 66.7 mm (2.62 in) of the cylinder bore and 57.0 mm (2.25 in) of the piston stroke. The Tecumseh V50 engine produces 5.0 HP (3.7 kW).
