The Ford 5640 is equipped with a 4.4 L (268.0 cu·in) four-cylinder diesel engine and one of four transmissions: a constant mesh transmission with 8 forward and 2 reverse gears, a two-speed power shift transmission with 16 forward and 4 reverse gears or a synchronized shuttle transmission with 12 forward and 12 reverse gears, or four-speed power shift transmission with 16 forward and 16 reverse gears.

The Ford 5640 utility tractor used the Ford Genesis engine. It is a 4.4 L, 4,392 cm2, (268.0 cu·in) four-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 112.0 mm (4.41 in) of the cylinder bore and 112.0 mm (4.41 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 17.5:1. This engine produced 79.8 PS (58.7 kW; 78.7 HP) at 2,200 rpm of output power.
