Until 2010, the Kawasaki FH721V engine was installed on the John Deere X500, and since 2011 it used the Kawasaki FS730V engine.

Kawasaki FH721V. The Kawasaki FH721V is a 675 cc (41.20 cu-in) V-twin 90° air-cooled 4-stroke internal combustion small gasoline motor with a vertical shaft. The FH721V has vertical PTO shaft; V-twin 90° design with cast iron cylinder liners and overhead valves (OHV). A 72.5 mm (2.85 in) cylinder bore and 76 mm (2.99 in) piston stroke give the motor a total of 675 cc (41.19 cu-in) of displacement. Compression ratio rating is 8.1:1. The Kawasaki FH721V develops 25 HP (18.6 kW) at 3,600 rpm.

Kawasaki FS730V. The Kawasaki FS730V is a 726 cc (44.3 cu-in) V-twin 90° air-cooled 4-stroke internal combustion small gasoline engine with a vertical shaft. The FS730V has 90 degrees V-twin design with vertical PTO shaft, overhead V-valves, cast iron cylinder liners, and spherical combustion chamber. Bore and stroke are 78.0 mm (3.07 in) and 76.0 mm (2.99 in), respectively. Compression ratio rating is 8.2:1. The Kawasaki FS730V produced 26 HP (19.4 kW) at 3,600 rpm.

The John Deere X500 tractor is equipped with the Kanzaki K72B belt-driven hydrostatic transmission (infinite forward and reverse), foot-activated differential lock and manual steering. This tractor used open operator station, independent PTO-shaft with electric clutch and 18.9 L (5.0 US gal.) fuel tank for models with the Kawasaki FH721V engine and 16.7 L (4.4 US gal.) for models with the Kawasaki FS730V engine.

  1. my x500 will go forward when I step on the forward foot pedal but when I step on the reverse foot pedal it will move in reverse.
    What should I check?

  2. If it moves forwards with plenty of torque, then start looking under the foot drive control pedal, and move your way back. Make sure the drive control bar that goes from the pedal to the transaxle under the tractor moves when you push on the pedal. Has the transaxle fluid been changed at all? You should change it every 500 hours, I think.
