This tractor was manufactured by MTD from 1973 to 1976 ()the MTD 960 model was manufactured from 1970 to 1976 and had three generations. The MTD 960 is equipped with a 0.5 L (32.4 cu·in) single-cylinder gasoline engine and a belt-driven gear type transmission with 4 forward and 1 reverse gears.

The MTD 960 garden tractor used the Briggs & Stratton 326000 engine. It is a 0.5 L, 531 cm2, (32.4 cu·in) single-cylinder natural aspirated gasoline engine with 90.0 mm (3.54 in) of the cylinder bore and 83.0 mm (3.27 in) of the piston stroke. This engine produced 16.2 PS (11.9 kW; 16.0 HP) of output power.
