The IH 1086 row-crop tractor used the International Harvester DT414 engine. It is a 6.8 L, 6,784 cm2, (414 cu·in) six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with 109.0 mm (4.29 in) of the cylinder bore and 121.0 mm (4.76 in) of the piston stroke. The DT414 engine has replaceable cast-iron wet type cylinder sleeves; forged steel, fully counterbalanced crankshaft with seven main bearings; forged steel “I” beam connecting rods; aluminum alloy pistons with a combustion chamber molded-in dome. The engine used an American Bosch rotary distributor injection pump; multi-holes injection nozzles; full pressure lubrication system; a liquid cooling system with pump circulation; dry type, two-stage air cleaner. This engine produced 131.9 PS (97 kW; 130.0 HP) of maximum output power.
The International Harvester 1086 is equipped with hydrostatic power steering, hydraulic disc brakes, cab (standard) and 238.5 liters (63 US gal.; 52.5 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
