The J.I. Case 970 is equipped with one of two engines: a 6.6 L (401.0 cu·in) six-cylinder diesel engine or a 6.2 L (377.0 cu·in) six-cylinder gasoline engine and one of two transmissions: a unsynchronized gear transmission with 8 forward and 2 reverse gears and dry disc clutch or a partial power shift transmission with 12 forward and 4 reverse gears and hydraulic wet disc clutch.

The tractor could be equipped with the following engines:

  • J.I. Case. It is a 6.6 L, 6,571 cm2, (401.0 cu·in) six-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 105.0 mm (4.13 in) of the cylinder bore and 127.0 mm (5 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 16.5:1. This engine produced 87.2 PS (64.1 kW; 86.0 HP) at 1,900 rpm of output power.
  • J.I. Case. It is a 6.2 L, 6,178 cm2, (377.0 cu·in) six-cylinder natural aspirated gasoline engine. The cylinder bore is 102.0 mm (4.02 in) and the piston stroke is 127.0 mm (5 in). The compression ratio rating is 7.5:1.

The J.I. Case 970 is equipped with power steering, differential hydraulic dry disc brakes, an open operator station and 189.3 liters (50 US gal.; 41.6 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
