The John Deere 2240 is a 2WD utility tractor manufactured by John Deere in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany from 1976 to 1982. The first version was produced from 1976 to 1979. The JD 2240 is equipped with a 0.2 L (10.9 cu·in) three-cylinder diesel engine and one of two transmissions: a collar shift transmission with 8 forward and 4 reverse gears or a two-speed power shift transmission with 16 forward and 8 reverse gears.
The John Deere 2240 utility tractor used the John Deere 3179DL engine. It is a 2.9 L, 2,933 cm2, (179.0 cu·in) three-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 106.0 mm (4.17 in) of the cylinder bore and 110.0 mm (4.33 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 16.2:1. This engine produced 50.7 PS (37.3 kW; 50.0 HP) at 2,500 rpm of output power.
The JD 2240 is equipped with power assist steering, hydraulic wet disc brakes, an open operator station, and 62.5 liters (16.5 US gal.; 13.7 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
