John Deere 285

The John Deere 285 is a lawn and garden tractor from 200 series of small tractors with V-twin 90° liquid-cooled 4-stroke Kawasaki FD590V vertical engine 585 cc (35.7 cu-in) and belt-driven hydrostatic transmission. The John Deere 285 garden tractor was manufactured in Horicon, Wisconsin, USA from 1987 to 1992.

The John Deere 285 tractor used a V-twin 90° liquid-cooled four-stroke Kawasaki FD590V gasoline engine with vertical PTO shaft. The FD590V has OHV (overhead valve design); cast iron cylinder liners; horizontal draft type carburetor with fixed main jet; mechanical diaphragm type fuel pump; full transistor ignition system with fixed timing; mechanical governor. The Kawasaki FD590V develops 18.0 HP (13.4 kW) at 3,600 rpm and 41.5 Nm (4.23 kg·m; 30.63 ft·lb) at 2,600 rpm of torque. A 74.0 mm (2.91 in) cylinder bore and 68.0 mm (2.68 in) piston stroke give the motor a total of 585 cc of displacement. Compression ratio rating is 8.7:1.

The John Deere 285 is equipped with Sundstrand BDU-21 belt-driven hydrostatic transmission (infinite forward and reverse gears), manual steering, expanding mechanical shoe brakes. This tractor used open operator station. The JD 285 also features an electric starter and a large 3-gallon (11.4 L) fuel tank.
