This first generation was manufactured from 2008 to 2011. The JD 5085M is equipped with a 4.5 L (276.0 cu·in) four-cylinder diesel engine and one of four transmissions: a partially synchronized transmission with 16 forward and 16 reverse gears, a partially synchronized transmission with 12 forward and 4 reverse gears, a partially synchronized with power shuttle transmission with 16 forward and 16 reverse gears or partially synchronized with power shuttle transmission with 32 forward and 16 reverse gears.

The JD 5085M utility tractor used the John Deere PowerTech M 4045 engine. It is a 4.5 L, 4,523 cm2, (276.0 cu·in) four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with 106.0 mm (4.17 in) of the cylinder bore and 127.0 mm (5 in) of the piston stroke. This engine produced 86.2 PS (63.4 kW; 85 HP) at 2,200 rpm of output power.

The John Deere 5085M is equipped with hydrostatic power steering, hydraulic wet disc brakes, foldable ROPS, deluxe ROPS or Cab (optional) and 114.7 liters (30.3 US gal.; 25.2 Imp. gal) fuel tank for the ROPS version or 154.0 liters (40.7 US gal.; 33.9 Imp. gal) for the cab version.
