The John Deere 6400 is a 2WD or 4WD utility tractor from the 6000 series. This tractor was manufactured by John Deere in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany from 1992 to 1998. The JD 6400 is equipped with a 4.5 L (276.0 cu·in) four-cylinder diesel engine and one of two transmissions: a fully synchronized transmission with 12 forward and 4 reverse gears (21 forward and 7 reverse gears with creeper) or a partial power shift transmission with 16 forward and 16 reverse gears (28 forward and 28 reverse gears with creeper).
The JD 6400 utility tractor used the John Deere CD4045 engine. It is a 4.5 L, 4,523 cm2, (276.0 cu·in) four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with 106.0 mm (4.17 in) of the cylinder bore and 127.0 mm (5 in) of the piston stroke. This engine produced 86.2 PS (63.4 kW; 85.0 HP) at 2,300 rpm of PTO output power.
The John Deere 6400 is equipped with hydrostatic power steering, hydraulic wet disc brakes, two-post foldable ROPS or ComfortGard Cab (optional), and 109.8 liters (29 US gal.; 24.2 Imp. gal) fuel tank for the ROPS version or 165.0 liters (43.6 US gal.; 36.3 Imp. gal) fuel tank for the cab version.
