The John Deere 4440 is a 2WD or 4WD row-crop tractor from the Iron Horses series. This tractor was manufactured by John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa, USA from 1978 to 1982. The John Deere 4440 is equipped with a 7.6 L six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine and one of two transmissions: John Deere Quad-Range with 16 forward and 6 reverse gears or John Deere PowerShift with 8 forward and 4 reverse gears.
The John Deere 4440 row-crop tractor used the John Deere engine. It is a 7.6 L, 7,636 cm2, (466 cu·in) six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with 116.0 mm (4.57 in) of the cylinder bore and 121.0 mm (4.76 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 14.9:1. This engine produced 132 PS (97 kW; 130 HP) of maximum horsepower. The John Deere diesel motor used a pressurized lubrication system with a full-flow filter; a direct injection fuel system with an in-line fuel pump; a dry type air filter with a safety element; a dual-pressure cooling system with centrifugal pump and dual heavy-duty thermostats.
The JD 4440 is equipped with full-power hydrostatic steering, hydraulic wet disc brakes, pedal-actuated hydraulic differential lock, Sound-Gard cab (open operator station with four-post ROPS was available as an option and 245 liters (64.7 US gal.; 53.9 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
The John Deere 4440 tractor used one of two transmissions:
- John Deere Quad-Range: 2-speed power shifted planetary and 8-speed synchronized with hydraulically-operated, multiplate-disc wet clutch (Perma-Clutch)
