The JD 2440 is equipped with a 3.6 L (219.0 cu·in) four-cylinder diesel engine and one of three transmissions: a collar shift transmission with 8 forward and 4 reverse gears, a two-speed power shift with dry disc clutch transmission with 16 forward and 8 reverse gears or a power shuttle transmission with 8 forward and 8 reverse gears.

It is a 3.6 L, 3,589 cm2, (219.0 cu·in) four-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 102.0 mm (4.02 in) of the cylinder bore and 110.0 mm (4.33 in) of the piston stroke. This engine produced 61.5 PS (45.2 kW; 60.6 HP) at 2,500 rpm of output power.

The JD 2440 is equipped with power steering, hydraulic wet disc brakes, two-post ROPS, and 73.8 liters (19.5 US gal.; 16.2 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
