The John Deere 2520 row-crop tractor is equipped with one of two engines: a 3.6 L four-cylinder diesel engine or a 3.3 L four-cylinder gasoline engine and one of two transmissions: full powershift transmission with hydraulic wet disc clutch and 8 forward and 4 reverse gears or partially synchronized transmission with single dry disc clutch and 8 forward and 2 reverse gears.

The JD 2520 row-crop tractor could be equipped with the following engines:

  • John Deere diesel engine. It is a 3.6 L, 3,589 cm2, (219.0 cu·in) four-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 102.0 mm (4.02 in) of the cylinder bore and 110.0 mm (4.33 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 16.7:1.
  • John Deere gasoline engine. It is a 3.3 L, 3,321 cm2, (202.7 cu·in) four-cylinder natural aspirated gasoline engine. The cylinder bore is 98.0 mm (3.86 in) and the piston stroke is 110.0 mm (4.33 in). The compression ratio ratin is 7.6:1.

The John Deere 2520 is equipped with hydrostatic power steering, differential hydraulic wet disc brakes and open operator station (Cab was available as an option).
