The John Deere 2550 is equipped with a 3.9 L (239.0 cu·in) four-cylinder diesel engine and one of three transmissions: a partially synchronized transmission with 8 forward and 4 reverse gears, a partial power shift transmission with 16 forward and 8 reverse gears or a power shuttle transmission with 8 forward and reverse gears.

The JD 2550 utility tractor used the John Deere engine. It is a 3.9 L, 3,917 cm2, (239.0 cu·in) four-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 106.0 mm (4.17 in) of the cylinder bore and 110.0 mm (4.33 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 17.4:1. This engine produced 73 PS (53.7 kW; 72.0 HP) at 2,500 rpm of output power.

The John Deere 2550 is equipped with hydrostatic power steering, differential hydraulic wet disc brakes, two-post ROPS or Sound-Gard cab, and 91.0 liters (24 US gal.; 20 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
