The John Deere 4050 is equipped with one of two engines: a 7.6 L (466.0 cu·in) six-cylinder diesel engine or a 5.9 L (359.0 cu·in) six-cylinder diesel engine and one of two transmissions: a partial power shift transmission with 16 forward and 6 reverse gears and with Perma-Clutch wet disc clutch or a full powershift transmission with 15 forward and 4 reverse gears and with Perma-Clutch wet disc clutch.

The compression ratio rating is 17.0:1. This engine produced 131.8 PS (96.9 kW; 130.0 HP) at 2,200 rpm of output power.
  • John Deere. It is a 5.9 L, 5,883 cm2, (359.0 cu·in) six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. The cylinder bore is 106.0 mm (4.17 in) and the piston stroke is 110.0 mm (4.33 in). The compression ratio rating is 17.8:1.

The John Deere 4050 is equipped with power steering, hydrostatic wet disc brakes, Sound-Gard cab with air-conditioning or four-post Roll-Gard ROPS (optional), and 174.1 liters (46 US gal.; 38.3 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
