The John Deere 4100 utility tractor is equipped with a 1.0 L three-cylinder diesel engine and one of two transmissions: partially synchronized transmission with 8 forward and 4 reverse gears or hydrostatic transmission with infinite (2-range) forward and reverse.

The JD 4100 compact utility tractor used the Yanmar 3TNE74 engine. It is a 1.0 L, 1,006 cm2, (61.4 cu·in) three-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 74.0 mm (2.91 in) of the cylinder bore and 78.0 mm (3.07 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 23.5:1. This engine produced 20.3 PS (14.9 kW; 20.0 HP) at 2,650 rpm of gross output power and 53.8 N·m (5.5 kg·m, 39.7 ft·lb) of torque.

The John Deere 4100 is equipped with power steering, differential wet disc brakes, two-post ROPS and 22.0 liters (5.8 US gal.; 4.8 Imp. gal) fuel tank. The JD 4100 utility tractor could be equipped with the John Deere 410 loader.
