The John Deere 4300 is equipped with a 1.5 L three-cylinder diesel engine and one of three transmissions: partially synchronized (SyncShift) transmission with 9 forward and 3 reverse gears, partially synchronized (SyncReverser) transmission with 12 forward and 12 reverse gears or hydrostatic transmission with infinite (3-range) forward and reverse gears.

The John Deere 4300 compact utility tractor used the Yanmar 3TNE84 engine. It is a 1.5 L, 1,496 cm2, (91.3 cu·in) three-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine with 84.0 mm (3.31 in) of the cylinder bore and 90.0 mm (3.54 in) of the piston stroke. The compression ratio rating is 18.0:1. This engine produced 32.6 PS (24.0 kW; 32.2 HP) of output power.
