The JD 5085M is equipped with a 4.5 L (276.0 cu·in) four-cylinder diesel engine and one of three transmissions: a partially synchronized transmission with 12 forward and 4 reverse gears, a partially synchronized with power shuttle transmission with 16 forward and 16 reverse gears or a partially synchronized with power shuttle transmission with 32 forward and 16 reverse gears.

The JD 5085M utility tractor used the John Deere engine. It is a 4.5 L, 4,523 cm2, (276.0 cu·in) four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with 106.0 mm (4.17 in) of the cylinder bore and 127.0 mm (5 in) of the piston stroke. This engine produced 86.2 PS (63.4 kW; 85.0 HP) at 2,200 rpm of output power.

The John Deere 5085M is equipped with hydrostatic power steering, hydraulic wet disc brakes, foldable ROPS, isolated platform, cab or deluxe cab (optional) and 113.6 liters (30 US gal.; 25 Imp. gal) fuel tank for ROPS version or 136.3 liters (36 US gal, 30 Imp. gal) for the cab version.
