The John Deere 5500 is equipped with a 3.9 L (239.0 cu·in) four-cylinder diesel engine and one of three transmissions: an unsynchronized gear transmission with 9 forward and 3 reverse gears, a partially synchronized transmission with 9 forward and 3 reverse gears or a power shuttle transmission with 12 forward and 12 reverse gears.
