The John Deere 2950 is equipped with a 5.9 L (359.0 cu·in) six-cylinder diesel engine and one of two transmissions: a partial power shift transmission with 16 forward and 8 reverse gears or a partially synchronized transmission with 12 forward and 8 reverse gears.

The JD 2950 is equipped with power steering, differential hydraulic wet disc brakes, two-post ROPS (canopy or Sound-Gard cab with heat and air-conditioning was available as an option), and 122.3 liters (32.3 US gal.; 26.9 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
