Wheel Horse 312-8 is equipped with one of two engines: the Kohler K301S, a 0.5 L (29.0 cu·in) single-cylinder gasoline engine (1985-1987), or the Kohler M12S, a 0.5 L (29.0 cu·in) single-cylinder gasoline engine (after 1987) and belt-driven gear transmission with 6 forward and 2 reverse gears.

  • Kohler K301S. It is a 0.5 L, 476 cm2, (29.0 cu·in) single-cylinder natural aspirated gasoline engine with 86.0 mm (3.39 in) of the cylinder bore and 83.0 mm (3.27 in) of the piston stroke. This engine produced 12.2 PS (8.9 kW; 12.0 HP) at 3,600 rpm of output power.
  • Kohler M12S. It is a 0.5 L, 476 cm2, (29.0 cu·in) single-cylinder natural aspirated gasoline engine. The cylinder bore is 86.0 mm (3.39 in) and the piston stroke is 83.0 mm (3.27 in). The compression ratio rating is 6.6:1. This engine produced 12.2 PS (8.9 kW; 12.0 HP) at 3,600 rpm of output power.

The Wheel Horse 312-8 is equipped with manual steering, open operator station, and 8.5 liters (2.2 US gal.; 1.9 Imp. gal) fuel tank.
